The long, low lodge on the steppe at dusk, a flat-topped mountain beyond.

Tierra Patagonia was created by the Chilean Purcell family, founders of Ski Portillo, on a bluff where the pampa meets Lake Sarmiento at the edge of Torres del Paine National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1978. The architect CazĂș Zegers, with Rodrigo Ferrer and Roberto Benavente, shaped the lodge as one long, low curve of sustainably sourced lenga wood, as if worn smooth by the wind, and the rooms look across the lake to the Paine Massif. Chilean craftspeople made the furnishings and textiles from regional materials, drawing on the old estancias and the Tehuelche people. A round bar, a library and a map room where the next day's outings are planned lead to the restaurant, under a curved lenga ceiling, which cooks local produce and pours Chilean wines. Stays are all-inclusive: meals, an open bar, daily guided walks, rides or climbs shared with other guests, transfers from Puerto Natales and the Uma Spa, with its heated indoor infinity pool, sauna, steam room and open-air whirlpool. The lodge is now part of the Beckons collection and welcomes children from 10.

Insider tip Leave unscheduled time at the lodge between excursions, for wine, a spa treatment or an afternoon in the library with the massif in the windows.

Why I choose it An all-inclusive lodge by CazĂș Zegers where the guiding, the spa and the view of the Paine Massif are all part of the stay.
