Hotel Cumbres San Pedro de Atacama is the desert hotel of Hoteles Cumbres, a Chilean group whose other hotels are in Santiago. It lies at about 2,500 metres on the edge of the oasis town of San Pedro, in the Atacama, the driest desert in the world, and its low buildings take their cue from the ayllus, the old farming communities of the oasis. All 60 rooms measure 52 square metres, each with a private terrace and an outdoor shower, and some connect for families. The spa, recently renovated, covers more than 1,000 square metres outdoors, with three pools at air temperature and two heated pools, saunas, massage and treatment rooms and a poolside bar. Kunza, the restaurant, joins local ingredients with fine-dining technique, serving breakfast on the terraces or in the rooms and a barbecue on Saturday nights. The hotel runs its own guided excursions in four-wheel-drive vehicles to the Tatio geysers, the Valley of the Moon, the Rainbow Valley and the Chaxa and Cejar lagoons, with a walk through the Guatín gorge, bicycle trips and astronomy tours after dark. All-inclusive programmes include airport transfers; otherwise the hotel arranges them on request.

Insider tip San Pedro sits at about 2,400 metres and the hotel advises drinking plenty of water before and during the stay; book excursions together with the room, through the hotel's excursions desk.
Why I choose it A calm base in San Pedro de Atacama with large rooms, a big outdoor spa and its own guided excursions.
