Awasi Patagonia sits within a private reserve of 7,000 acres on the edge of Torres del Paine National Park, looking across Lake Sarmiento to the granite towers of the Paine range. A forest of lenga and ñirre trees breaks the wind, and guanacos, rheas, foxes, condors and pumas move freely across land Awasi keeps as a natural corridor beside the park. The villas, built of native lenga and raised on stilts, are spread well apart, each with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the mountains, a wood-burning stove and an outdoor hot tub for night-sky viewing. There is no set programme. Every villa has its own guide and 4x4, so hikes to the Base Torres or Grey Glacier, rides with gauchos, fossil walks and dawn puma tracking follow each guest's pace. The restaurant, open only to Awasi guests, is led by chef Natalia Paz and cooks fjord fish, king crab, local lamb and native berries, with Chilean wines. The lodge runs chiefly on solar power and welcomes children from 14. Summer brings the longest days for trekking, and also the strongest winds.

Insider tip Ask your guide for a sunrise wildlife photography outing, when guanacos, rheas, foxes and condors are most active, and a puma is possible.
Why I choose it Each villa has its own guide, vehicle and view of the Paine towers, so Patagonia is explored on your terms rather than a lodge timetable.
