Awasi Atacama is a small lodge in San Pedro de Atacama, the desert town of northern Chile, a few blocks from the main square and the old church. A historic wall that once sheltered shepherds encloses it, and inside are 12 circular rooms in adobe, wood and stone, modelled on the ancient Tulor dwellings of the region, each at least 500 square feet with a private patio and an outdoor shower. What sets Awasi apart is simple: every room comes with its own guide and vehicle, so each day is planned around you, whether that means volcanoes, geysers, salt flats, archaeological sites or an evening with an astronomer. The stay is all-inclusive, and the daily menu brings Andean ingredients such as quinoa and native potatoes together with international cooking. There is a pool, a spa, a library and a lounge with wood-burning fires for cold desert evenings. A minimum stay of three nights applies, and private transfers from Calama are included.

Insider tip Come back from the day's excursion in time to sit by the pool with a glass of local rica rica lemonade.
Why I choose it A private guide and vehicle for every room means the Atacama is seen on your own terms, which is rare in a desert this popular.
