Hotel Cabo de Hornos

  • Best time: November to March, the southern summer
The rooftops of Punta Arenas with the sea beyond.

Hotel Cabo de Hornos faces the Plaza Muñoz Gamero in the historic centre of Punta Arenas, close to the city's restaurants, museums and offices. It was proposed in 1957 by the Sociedad Explotadora de Tierra del Fuego to help the region's young tourist trade; the first stone was laid on February 14, 1959, and building took almost five years because of the climate and the distance, so the hotel opened in September 1962. Hoteles Australis has owned it since 2004. The architect Pedro Kovacic led a full renovation in 2005, the interiors were redone by Enrique Concha in 2021, and a new tower added 70 rooms in 2024. Rooms range from doubles looking over the main square and the city's rooftops to deluxe doubles with views of the Strait of Magellan, with suites, triples and quadruples for families; all have individually controlled heating. There is a buffet breakfast with à la carte dishes, a lounge, a wellness centre with massage, and box lunches for excursions. Children up to five stay free when they share their parents' bedding. It is a practical first and last night for the flight to the Antarctic Peninsula.
