A terrace with an infinity pool and stone walls, the sun setting beside a volcano.

Tierra Atacama lies on the edge of San Pedro de Atacama, a small village in Chile's northern desert, with the Andes and the cone of Licancabur volcano filling the view. The lodge is built around the adobe walls of an old cattle corral, and its glass-walled rooms are made of local stone, adobe and rough timber, with furniture by regional craftspeople and native medicinal plants in the gardens. There are 28 rooms, each designed to bring the desert inside. The stay is all-inclusive, from the airport transfer to meals, drinks and the daily excursions. Guides lead hikes, horse rides and drives to the salt flats, geyser fields, lagoons, dunes and canyons of the altiplano, and evenings bring a clear night sky over the desert. The kitchen keeps food light for the altitude and the heat, with local, seasonal ingredients and Chilean wines. Uma Spa has a heated indoor pool, sauna, steam room and treatment rooms, and outside there is an infinity pool, a jacuzzi and spaces for yoga, with outdoor baths facing the volcanoes. The mood is relaxed and easy, and a minimum stay of two nights applies.

Insider tip Order a pisco sour at the bar, where it is made with rica rica, a herb that grows wild in the desert.

Why I choose it A beautifully made desert lodge with excellent guiding included, which makes the Atacama simple. It pairs with Tierra Patagonia for a Chile journey from north to south.
