Tayka del Desierto Hotel stands in the heart of the Siloli Desert in south-western Bolivia, in a landscape the hotel describes as painted in a range of colours by nature. It was built beside a spring where desert birds, partridges among them, came to drink, and the spring and the birds gave the hotel its full name, Tayka del Desierto Ojo de Perdiz, Partridge's Eye, also known as Ojito de Perdiz. It is one of a small group of Tayka hotels, alongside the Tayka de Sal and Tayka de Piedra, and it is well placed for the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Flora and Fauna National Reserve, with its coloured lagoons, the Sol de Mañana geysers and the Stone Tree. This is a simple, practical desert lodge rather than a grand hotel: rooms range from singles, doubles, triples and quadruples to a double suite, all with a private bathroom, hot water and heating, and there are separate rooms for drivers, guides and cooks. The restaurant and café have a wide terrace over the desert and serve breakfast, which is included, lunch, dinner and packed lunches for the road. The common areas are built of stone with rustic details, and there is wifi throughout.

Insider tip Order a packed lunch from the restaurant the evening before, as the days out to the lagoons and geysers are long and there is little on the road.
Why I choose it The practical choice in the Siloli Desert, a stone lodge by a spring close to the coloured lagoons and the Sol de Mañana geysers.
