Sensei Lānaʻi, A Four Seasons Resort

  • Virtuoso
  • Open year-round
Black lava sea cliffs and surf on the coast of Lanai.

Sensei Lānaʻi stands in the cool, pine-covered uplands of Lānaʻi, far from the island's beaches, on the site of The Lodge at Koele. The lodge opened in 1991, came under Four Seasons management in 2005 and was remade in 2019 as an adults-only wellness retreat built around the Sensei Way and its three paths: move, nourish and rest. There are 96 rooms and suites over two storeys, among them Koele Suites with a separate dining area and Kaiholena Suites of about 1,200 square feet with a fireplace. The heart of the place is the spa, set in 10 private hale of 1,000 square feet each, with ofuro tubs, infrared saunas, steam rooms and plunge pools; two have watsu pools. An onsen garden is open for bathing at night, and a yoga pavilion fills with natural light. Each stay begins with a consultation and a personal plan of sessions, classes and island outings, from riding and sailing to golf on the Jack Nicklaus course above Hulopoe Bay. Sensei by Nobu is the restaurant, alongside the Koele Garden Bar, and an all-inclusive meal plan can be added. Guests must be 16 or over, and there is a two-night minimum.
