The resort on its clifftop above the Pacific at sunset, the coast curving away.

Terranea opened in 2009 on 102 oceanfront acres of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, on the site of the old Marineland of the Pacific, with the Pacific in front and Catalina Island on the horizon. Its architecture is contemporary California coastal with a Spanish accent. The 582 rooms, suites, bungalows, casitas and villas run from intimate rooms to residential-style casitas and villas of two and three bedrooms, made for families and stays across generations. The Kids Club takes children aged three to 12, with science, crafts and a Build-A-Bear session, and there are four pools: the family pool has a 140-foot waterslide, the Vista Pool is for 13 and over, and Cielo Point is for adults. Days bring coastal trails, tide pools, kayaking through sea caves, falconry, archery and The Links, a nine-hole par-three course by the ocean. The Spa at Terranea covers 50,000 square feet at the water's edge, with 25 treatment rooms, and was renovated in 2025. Mar'sel serves refined coastal cooking and is listed in the MICHELIN Guide, Nelson's looks over the coves made famous by the 1950s series Sea Hunt, and the kitchens draw on the resort's own herb gardens and lemon groves. For weddings and celebrations there are 135,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space, including an 18,000-square-foot ballroom.
