Sage Lodge stands on the banks of the Yellowstone River in Montana's Paradise Valley, 35 minutes north of Yellowstone National Park, on more than 1,200 acres of private land beneath Emigrant Peak and the Absaroka Mountains. The lodge was set well back so that the riverbank could stay as it was, and some 300 acres of shoreline are left undeveloped along the mile and a half of river within the property. Rooms in the main lodge, inspired by anglers, measure 420 to 630 square feet, with gas fireplaces, balconies, patios or window seats facing the peaks, and soaking tubs in the larger categories. Four Ranch Houses of 2,783 square feet, each with four bedrooms and a full kitchen, overlook the casting pond. The Grill, over the river, serves a three-course menu that crosses rustic Montana with the modern steakhouse, and the Fireside Room offers breakfast, brunch and backcountry picnics, with cured meats from local ranches. Fly-fishing on a stocked trout pond, river floats, guided night-sky walks and cooking classes fill the days. The North Entrance to Yellowstone, open to regular vehicles all year, makes this a base for every season.

Why I choose it A riverside lodge on 1,200 private acres at the gateway to Yellowstone, as good for wolf-watching in winter as for the park in summer.
