Chamba Camp Thiksey

  • Best time: May to early Oct
A white suite tent lit at dusk in a garden, with mountains behind.

Chamba Camp Thiksey, one of the TUTC camps, stands below Thiksey Monastery, one of the great gompas of Ladakh, often compared to a smaller Potala Palace. It lies in the Indus Valley, a short drive from Leh, and the setting does most of the work. Tents come in three categories, Executive, Luxury and the Presidential Suite, each fully furnished with its own bathroom and climate control. Butler service is shared across the camp, or kept for the Presidential Suite alone. Each morning the monks of Thiksey gather for prayers, and guests can join the ceremony as the valley wakes. Days are built around outings arranged by the camp, from rafting on the Indus to village walks, archery and monastery hikes, and meals are served in the dining tent, cooked from local produce on a farm-to-fork basis. The camp runs only from May to early October, when the high passes are open and Ladakh is easiest to reach. It is a place for travellers who want the spiritual life of the valley close at hand, with comfort that does not get in the way.

Rooms
Tented suites in three categories

Insider tip Rest completely for the first two days after flying into Leh, as the local authorities advise, then join the monks' morning prayers at Thiksey.

Why I choose it The strongest spiritual thread of any camp we use in India; wildlife is the lighter half here.
