Villa Dubrovnik sits on a cliff in the Sveti Jakov area of Dubrovnik, looking across the Adriatic to the island of Lokrum and the Old Town. The architect Mladen Frka designed it in 1961 as a residential building, and two years later it became an annex of the Hotel Argentina; its clean, rational lines still set it apart from the city's older hotels. The 55 rooms and suites face the sea, most of them with a view of the Old Town. They are named after expressions in old Dubrovnik dialect and were designed by Studio Arthur Casas, with original Croatian stone, pieces by Gio Ponti and furniture by the Croatian maker Prostoria, in whites and sandy tones lifted by sea blue, green and terracotta. The Villa Kolin Residence, with three bedrooms, a private pool and its own path through a small pine wood, is the most private of all. Villa Spa builds its treatments on Mediterranean herbs such as lavender and mint, and the indoor pool and hot tubs look straight out to sea. Restaurant Pjerin is recommended by the MICHELIN Guide, and Galanto is the only rooftop bar in Dubrovnik.

Insider tip Take a private boat out to the Elafiti Islands for a day, and keep another for wine tasting on the Pelješac peninsula.
Why I choose it Most of the rooms look across the sea to the Old Town, and the hotel's 1960s architecture gives it a character of its own.
