Villa Korta Katarina is a restored 1930s estate above the sea in Orebić, a seaside town on the Pelješac Peninsula in Dalmatia, with views across the Adriatic to the nearby islands. The American philanthropists Lee and Penny Anderson spent nearly 10 years restoring it and opened it in 2018 as a villa, small hotel and winery in one. The eight suites are each styled differently, with antiques, gilt mirrors and chandeliers in a Baroque spirit alongside smart-room controls, and each looks out to the Adriatic. They can be booked one at a time or together as a whole villa. The winery makes seven wines, among them Plavac Mali, Zinfandel and Pošip, and tastings and vineyard visits are part of a stay. The restaurant serves Dalmatian cooking from a Relais & Châteaux kitchen, and there is a pool deck, spa treatments on request and access to the beach. For days at sea the estate runs a 43-foot hybrid day boat, and the 61.3-metre motor yacht Katharine can also be arranged.

Why I choose it A small, house-party estate with its own wines and boats, and a quieter stop between Hvar and Dubrovnik.
