ULUM Moab

  • One Key
  • Best time: Apr to May; Sep to Oct
A tall red sandstone arch on bare rock, with snow-capped mountains far behind.

ULUM Moab is a tented resort in the desert at La Sal, outside Moab in Utah, and it offers a good deal more than camping. The lobby is a permanent building, and the tents are set well apart from one another, each with generous room inside to lounge, Parachute linens, West Elm furniture and a rain shower stocked with Aesop products. Two national parks, Arches and Canyonlands, are within reach, along with the hiking, mountain biking and river rafting that draw people to Moab in the first place. After dark, the night sky here is among the clearest and brightest anywhere. The kitchen takes its role seriously as well, with a full breakfast, a juice and espresso bar, and modern Southwestern cooking in the evening, served with beer, wine and canned cocktails. The resort is seasonal, open from late March to late October, which makes it a natural stop on a spring or autumn road journey through the canyon country. It suits travellers who want comfort and good food at the end of a long day outdoors.

Insider tip Keep at least one evening free at camp rather than driving into town: once the light goes, the night sky over the site is exceptionally clear.

Why I choose it Comfortable, well-fed nights between two of America's great national parks, without losing the feeling of sleeping out in the desert.
