A fishing pier running out from a sandy point, with high-rise towers on the shore and the sea in the foreground.

1 Hotel South Beach opened in March 2015 on 600 feet of beachfront and was the first hotel in Miami Beach to earn a five-key Green Key rating. It is also certified LEED Silver, with solar panels, thermostats that respond to occupancy, and ozone and chlorine treatment in every pool. Nature is built into the fabric. A green wall holds nearly 12,000 plants, the garden is a certified Wildlife Habitat of the National Wildlife Federation, the lobby ceilings are salvaged wood from Alaskan water towers, and the walls use regional coral stone and beetle-kill pine. The hotel sign is carved from 7,500 pounds of recovered Florida coral, and a whale sculpture by Cindy Pease Roe is made from debris collected on the beach. Irrigation is timed to the weather, filtered water stations replace bottles, and guests can borrow electric house cars. The hotel works with The ReefLine and the South Florida Wildlife Center. There are 426 rooms, a 30,000-square-foot rooftop pool area for adults, a 14,000-square-foot gym and the Bamford Wellness Spa, named Florida's top hotel spa four years running.

Insider tip Head for the 30,000-square-foot rooftop pool, kept for adults and the quietest corner of a lively hotel.

Why I choose it The benchmark for sustainable design on Miami Beach, with a MICHELIN Key. Hurricane season, June to November, is the time to avoid.
