The Louise

  • Virtuoso
  • Best time: Mar to May, Sep to Nov
A long restaurant with windows onto the vineyards.

The Louise stands among the vineyards of Marananga, on Seppeltsfield Road in the heart of the Barossa, a small estate of villa-style suites in a style that looks to southern Europe. There are 15 suites, each with a private terrace or courtyard, an open fireplace and an outdoor rain shower. The Stonewell Suites, of 95 square metres, face west over the neighbouring vines and catch the evening light, and hang contemporary work by local artists. The Marananga Suites, of 129 square metres, add a private courtyard and a spa bath, and the two-bedroom Bethany Suites, of 157 square metres, suit families. Appellation, the estate's restaurant, holds three Chef Hats, the highest rating in Australia's Good Food Guide, and cooks Barossa produce, with a five-course dinner each night. There is a pool, a sauna and a gym, and kangaroos often come close at breakfast. The programme stays close to the valley: complimentary Swirl Sessions on Fridays, when local winemakers pour their wines, introductions to winemakers, short guided tours of the art collection, cooking classes with local partners and helicopter flights over the vines. The Louise is part of the Beckons collection and welcomes children from 10.

Insider tip Plan to be in on a Friday for the Swirl Session, when a Barossa winemaker comes to pour and talk.

Why I choose it A small, quiet base in the Barossa, with good food at Appellation and easy introductions to the people who make the wine.
