qualia occupies the northernmost tip of Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays, on its own peninsula with water on three sides and views across the Coral Sea. The buildings are low and wooden and sit quietly among the bush, with contemporary interiors and colour rather than beige. Guests stay in pavilions of two kinds. The Leeward Pavilions are hidden in tropical bushland with glimpses of the sea, and the Windward Pavilions face the water and add a private plunge pool. The Beach House, for a family or friends, has its own 12-metre infinity pool and a guest house. Executive chef Joshua Hingston cooks Queensland produce at Long Pavilion, high among the eucalyptus, and at Pebble Beach on the edge of the sand. The spa sits at the heart of the resort, and the library holds rare books and board games. The reef is the reason to come: a helicopter over Heart Reef, a snorkelling day on the Great Barrier Reef, or a sail to Whitehaven Beach. Guests must be 16 or older.

Insider tip Ask for a Leeward Pavilion when you book and we will flag it for a better-placed one on arrival. The Windward Pavilions are the choice if a private plunge pool matters.
Why I choose it It is the most polished base for the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsundays, small enough to feel private and close enough to fly in easily.
