The Islington is an 11-room hotel in a Regency house built in 1847 on Davey Street in South Hobart, between the city and Mount Wellington, a six-minute drive from the centre and close to Battery Point and Salamanca Place. The original sandstone walls remain, set against contemporary interiors and a glass-walled addition, and a collection of fine art hangs through the house. The heritage gardens look up to the mountain. A married couple manage the hotel and live on site, and it feels more like a well-kept private house than a hotel. Islington Kitchen, led by head chef Anthony Illingworth, serves seasonal Tasmanian food, and the glass conservatory takes breakfast and lighter meals. For a drink in town, the hotel works with VIVA Wine & Piano Bar in Salamanca Place. Children under 16 are not accepted, and the hotel is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Hobart airport is about 20 to 30 minutes away by car.

Insider tip Ask for a room facing the garden and Mount Wellington, and book dinner at the hotel for at least one night.
Why I choose it A small, personal house in Hobart with serious food and art, a fitting end to a journey from Perth to Tasmania.
