Six Senses Douro Valley is a restored 19th-century manor house on the Quinta de Vale Abraão at Samodães, near Lamego, set high on a hill above terraced vineyards. The 71 rooms, suites and villas are modern within the old house and its additions, and two villas have private gardens and heated pools. The kitchen gardens supply Cozinha do Douro, which cooks contemporary Portuguese food from the estate's vegetables and herbs and from produce grown in the valley. The Wine Library and Terrace is the place to taste the region's vintages, with a cellar beneath and the Quinta bar for later in the evening. The spa is large, with 10 treatment rooms, indoor and outdoor heated pools, a gym and a yoga pavilion, and it runs wellness programmes over several days. Days can include a river cruise, visits to historic wineries, canoeing and kayaking, garden tours and, at harvest, a day as a winemaker or treading grapes. Porto is about 90 minutes by car.
