Octant Vila Monte

A cobbled path through cypresses and gardens to the white main house.

Octant Vila Monte is a farmhouse hotel at Moncarapacho, in the quieter eastern Algarve, set between the hills and the Ria Formosa lagoon near Olhão. It looks inland rather than at the sea: white buildings, gardens scented with herbs and orchards of citrus trees, with the coast a short drive away. The style mixes local tradition with a relaxed, contemporary look, in white with carved wood and simple, natural pieces. Rooms and suites are spread across houses on the property, including Casa Patio and Casa de Cima, with pool suites, adults-only suites and villas for families. Food is central to the stay. À Terra cooks around a central fire using produce from the region, Laranjal sits among the orange trees and there is a chef's table. Guests can learn about oysters from the lagoon, try local pottery or help prepare a shared meal, and films are shown outdoors in the evening. When the beach calls, the hotel runs a shuttle to Fuseta Island. Pets are welcome.

Insider tip On Saturdays, join the chef at the local market and stay for lunch with wine by the kitchen fire.

Why I choose it It shows the Algarve's countryside and lagoon rather than its busy resorts, which makes it a calm base for cycling and slow days.
