L'AND Vineyards sits in a south-facing valley in the Alentejo, about four kilometres from Montemor-o-Novo and its medieval castle, 20 minutes from Évora and around 45 minutes from Lisbon airport. The estate covers 66 acres of vines, oak and olive groves, and the architecture is low and minimal, by Promontório, with interiors by Márcio Kogan. There are 35 suites and nine villas with private pools. The Sky Suites have a roof that opens over the bed, so you fall asleep under the Alentejo night sky, while the Land Suites have private patios and outdoor fireplaces, and the Lake Villas stand on their own with a pool. Six hectares are planted with organic vines, and guests can take part in the winemaking. Mapa, the restaurant, holds a MICHELIN star, and there is a wine bar with a deck, a spa built around grape-based treatments, and pools among the vines. Évora, a UNESCO-listed city, is an easy outing, and the days can include hot air balloon flights, yoga and wine tastings.

Insider tip Book one of the Sky Suites with the retractable roof: the Alentejo is a designated dark sky reserve, and the view from bed is the reason to come.
Why I choose it It combines a working organic vineyard, serious cooking and modern design within an hour of Lisbon, an easy contrast to the city on a Portugal and Spain journey.
