Silverback Lodge sits high on a ridge above the forest canopy at Buhoma, on the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in western Uganda, about five minutes' walk from the park, with sweeping views over the valley and the forest. Bwindi is a UNESCO site of 124 square miles, home to about 350 mountain gorillas, roughly half of those left in the world, along with chimpanzees that are not habituated, more than 100 other species of mammal, 346 species of bird and 163 species of tree. The lodge opened in 2008, joined Marasa Africa in 2010, took up solar energy and better waste management from 2020 and was redesigned in 2025. Its 12 rooms, which the lodge calls Nests, look out over the forest, and each has a sunken tub on a private patio facing the trees. Evenings gather round the restaurant, the bar and the fire, and there is a spa for the days between treks. The lodge sells gorilla trekking packages and offers guided walks on the old forest trails with guides who know each call and footprint. Guests can fly into Kihihi Airstrip, drive the scenic route through the highlands, or arrive by helicopter at the lodge itself.
