No.5 Boutique Hotel, also called Hotel Number 5, is a small hotel at 5 Edna Road in the leafy suburbs of Entebbe, and its size is the point: guests are welcomed and looked after in an intimate, tranquil setting. All the rooms open onto the garden and the swimming pool, each with a small sitting area outside and an en-suite bathroom with a shower. They come as luxury doubles, luxury twins and luxury apartments, with air conditioning, a flat-screen television, a safe, a direct-dial telephone, filter coffee, Wi-Fi and mosquito nets over the beds; some have a balcony and some have lake views. The restaurant pairs carefully planned menus with an international wine list, and there are separate lunch, dinner and wood-fired oven menus, a bar, a shared lounge and the garden. Around the pool are loungers for long afternoons, and the hotel also has a fitness centre, a small spa for beauty and health treatments, and a gift shop selling locally made products and handmade jewellery. The front desk is open around the clock and there is a shuttle service. The beach at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre is a 15-minute walk away, and State House is nearby.

Insider tip The front desk is staffed around the clock, which helps with late arrivals and early departures; ask the hotel to arrange its shuttle before you land.
Why I choose it A small garden hotel with a pool in Entebbe, for the first and last nights of a journey through Uganda.
