Rancho La Puerta was founded in June 1940 by Edmond and Deborah Szekely, when she was 18; early guests brought their own tents and helped with the chores. It is still run by the family, with their daughter Sarah Livia Brightwood as president, and is regarded as the forerunner of the modern fitness resort and spa. The Ranch lies beneath the sacred Mount Kuchumaa at about 1,700 feet, four miles from the Tecate border crossing, across 4,000 acres with 40 miles of trails and 32 acres of gardens. The week is the unit here: seven nights, Saturday to Saturday, all-inclusive, with three farm-to-table meals a day, classes, guided hikes, evening talks and the San Diego shuttle. More than 40 fitness classes run daily, from Pilates, barre and TRX to Hydro-Fit and yoga, and there are three full-service spas. Tres Estrellas, the six-acre organic farm two miles away, supplies produce, herbs, eggs and goat milk, and a guided breakfast hike with the head gardener, Salvador Tinajero, ends at the farm. The casitas are dressed in Mexican folk art. Guests must be 14 or older, except in Family Week. Travel + Leisure named it the top international wellness retreat for 2026.
