Casa Polanco is a small hotel in a restored Neocolonial mansion from the 1940s, facing Parque Lincoln in the residential heart of Polanco. A modernist extension sits alongside, and the two are joined into one quiet house. There are 19 rooms and suites, each designed differently, with custom furniture, walnut floors, handmade textiles, marble bathrooms and pieces from the period of the house; some have balconies, and the Lincoln Suite has a terrace over the park. There is no full restaurant. Instead, breakfast is served in the bright La Veranda, afternoon tea follows later, and the library keeps an honesty bar for the evening. A terrace looks out over the treetops, and a small spa sits in a rooftop cabin, with a gym and yoga as well. The location does much of the work. Avenida Presidente Masaryk and its shops are a short walk, the Bosque de Chapultepec is close, and the National Museum of Anthropology, the Museo Tamayo and the Museum of Modern Art are all nearby, along with many of the city's leading restaurants.

Insider tip Walk rather than drive: Masaryk's boutiques, the Chapultepec woods and the Anthropology museum are all within an easy stroll.
Why I choose it It feels like a private house in one of the city's finest neighbourhoods, small enough for real attention and close to Mexico City's museums and tables.
