One&Only Moonlight Basin

  • Virtuoso
  • Two Keys
  • Best time: Dec to Mar for skiing, Jun to Sep for Yellowstone
A steaming hot spring in bands of orange and turquoise below a forested ridge.

One&Only Moonlight Basin sits on the north-west side of Lone Mountain in Big Sky, Montana, within an 8,100-acre landscape bordered by wild country towards Yellowstone National Park. The design, by Olson Kundig, is bold and contemporary, with walls of glass that bring the mountain views inside. There are 92 rooms, suites and cabins. In winter a private gondola takes guests to the slopes of Big Sky, and in the warmer months the resort turns to golf, fly fishing, hiking and fat-tire biking. Dining runs from Akira Back's Japanese-inspired menu to Wildwood, with American cooking from local producers, The Landing for alpine dining in the Sky Lounge, and Dear Josephine for cocktails. The One&Only Spa has an indoor pool, a heated hot tub, a sauna and treatment rooms. Grizzly bears and other wildlife share the valley, and guests are briefed before arrival on moving through it safely. The West Entrance of Yellowstone is about an hour's drive, close enough for a day at Old Faithful and back for dinner.

Insider tip Plan a day trip to Yellowstone through the West Entrance, about an hour away: you can see Old Faithful and the Lower Loop and still be back in time for dinner.

Why I choose it It works in every season, with skiing in winter and Yellowstone in summer, and its design and service set a new standard for Montana.
