Montage Healdsburg sits on 258 acres of vineyard and oak woodland just north of Healdsburg, where the Dry Creek, Russian River and Alexander valleys meet. It opened in 2021, and its low buildings take their cue from mid-century California design, looking out over the Sonoma hills through wide sheets of glass. The 130 rooms and suites are laid out as bungalows, with about a third of each given over to outdoor space, gas fire pits on the terraces and bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers and freestanding tubs. Spa Montage covers 11,500 square feet, and its programme runs from treatments to yoga among the vines. Hazel Hill is the main restaurant, cooking Californian food with a French accent, Hudson Springs Bar and Grill leans to seafood, and Scout Field Bar mixes the cocktails. The Healdsburg Country Store handles breakfast and picnics. Wine is the point of the region, and the resort has vineyards of its own and arranges tastings and winemaker dinners. Healdsburg's restaurants, tasting rooms and galleries are a few minutes' drive away.

Why I choose it A modern wine-country resort with a first-rate spa and room to breathe, close to Sonoma's liveliest small town. It pairs naturally with Napa on a single journey.
