King Alfonso XIII inaugurated the Ritz in 1910, founded with the hotelier César Ritz, and it has received royalty, politicians and society ever since. The Belle Époque palace stands in Madrid's Golden Triangle of Art, across from the Prado, a few minutes from the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofía, and beside the Retiro. After three years of restoration by the Paris house Gilles & Boissier it reopened in April 2021; the 100 rooms and 53 suites keep their old-world character with quiet modern comforts, and the named suites are the most ornate. The restoration added a wellness floor below ground with an indoor pool, a vitality pool, experience showers, a steam room and a gym. Quique Dacosta oversees food and drink. His Deessa, in the Alfonso XIII salon over the garden, holds a two-MICHELIN-star rating, with head chef Domenico Vildacci cooking the flavours of the Mediterranean and Extremadura across two tasting menus. The Palm Court serves afternoon tea, El Jardín del Ritz dines in the open air, and Pictura is the cocktail bar.
