The towers and domes of the old town of Cáceres at sunset.

Atrio stands on the Plaza de San Mateo in the old walled city of Cáceres, in Extremadura, a town founded in the first century B.C. and full of Roman arches, Moorish towers and cobbled lanes. For more than three decades it has been run by the chef Toño Pérez and José Antonio Polo, and it is a restaurant first. Atrio holds a three-MICHELIN-star rating, and Pérez, who was born in Cáceres, serves a single long tasting menu, adapted to each guest and built on Iberian pork and the produce of Extremadura. The wine cellar is its counterpart, with vintages of Pétrus and Latour stretching across decades. The architects Emilio Tuñón and Luis Mansilla set the 14 hotel rooms into the stone facade of an older building; inside almost everything is white, from the panelled walls to the large round baths, and suites add views over the old town. The art includes works by Andy Warhol. Some 30 metres away, the Palacio de Paredes Saavedra adds 11 more suites, and Torre de Sande, from the same owners, offers a more relaxed table nearby. Atrio is a member of Relais & Châteaux, and it holds Three MICHELIN Keys.
