Tall rainforest trees along the bank of a wide, calm river.

Cristalino Lodge lies on the Cristalino River in the southern Brazilian Amazon, inside a private reserve of more than 11,000 hectares of rainforest. It is one of the more accessible lodges in the Amazon: guests fly into Alta Floresta, drive about 40 minutes and then travel on by boat along the Teles Pires and Cristalino rivers. The region is known for its wildlife, with close to 600 bird species recorded, giant otters and the rare harpy eagle, and every outing is led by an experienced naturalist guide. Observation towers about 50 metres high rise above the canopy for sunrise and birdwatching, and there are forest trails, canoe trips on the river and a floating deck for quiet hours. The 18 rooms and bungalows are comfortable and simple, built to sit lightly in the forest, and the lodge runs largely on solar power. Chef Fábio Vieira cooks an à la carte menu of Amazonian dishes using local produce. Part of every stay funds the conservation work of the Cristalino Foundation.

Why I choose it We choose Cristalino for clients who want serious wildlife in the Amazon without a long expedition, with expert guides and a lodge that puts money back into the forest.
