EOLO stands alone on a ranch of 10,000 acres in the La Anita valley, halfway between El Calafate and Los Glaciares National Park, and well away from the bustle of the town. The land is where the first creole and European settlers of the region arrived, and the lodge looks the part, a Patagonian estancia with a hint of Tudor. Inside, the style is simple and warm. There are 17 rooms, every one with a view of the open steppe, mountains and lake. They mix antique vanities and polished wood with large modern bathrooms and deep baths set by the windows, in a palette of cream, wine red and dusty green. There is an indoor pool, a reading room stocked with fly-fishing books, and afternoon tea. The restaurant serves Argentine cooking. The ranch itself is the playground, for horse riding, mountain biking, trekking and birdwatching, with condors overhead. The Perito Moreno Glacier, the reason most people come this far south, is within easy reach for a day.

Insider tip Plan a day on horseback across the ranch alongside the glacier visit. The steppe and the condors are as much the point as the ice.
Why I choose it It gives guests Perito Moreno without the town, from a quiet estancia where the landscape is the luxury.
