Rosewood São Paulo anchors Cidade Matarazzo, a leafy seven-acre enclave of preserved early 20th-century buildings in Bela Vista, in the heart of the city. The hotel occupies the former Condessa Filomena Matarazzo Maternity hospital, one of the area's few surviving landmark buildings, and a new tower by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, wrapped in overlapping planted trellises; Philippe Starck designed the interiors. More than 250 native plant species grow across the site, work by 57 Brazilian artists hangs throughout, and the restored 1922 chapel, with a stained-glass rosette by Vik Muniz, holds monthly concerts. Rooms have marble bathrooms and rain showers, and suites add butler service. Le Jardin is a grand café with garden tables and kosher options; at Blaise, chef Fernando Bouzan cooks French dishes with Brazilian ingredients, and at Taraz, Felipe Bronze serves wood-fired South American food, and both appear in the MICHELIN Guide. The Asaya spa offers Guerlain treatments and a crystal-filled room, the rooftop has an adults-only infinity pool and bar, and the hotel runs on 100 per cent renewable energy. There are 181 rooms and suites, and the hotel holds three MICHELIN Keys.

Insider tip Swim early in the Emerald Garden Pool, a green, secluded corner that is quietest before the city wakes.
Why I choose it A Jean Nouvel garden tower and a restored maternity hospital with Starck interiors, and the finest address in São Paulo.
