Cheval Blanc Courchevel stands at the top of Courchevel 1850 in Le Jardin Alpin, ski-in and ski-out, with the pistes running past its terrace. It is small: 36 rooms and suites with a warm Alpine look of hide rugs, cuckoo clocks and marble bathrooms, and some 200 pieces of contemporary art around the building. Le 1947 à Cheval Blanc is a three-MICHELIN-starred restaurant for creative French cooking. The Guerlain spa has an indoor infinity pool and heated outdoor baths on the winter terrace, and the kids' club keeps younger guests busy. Skis are rented and boots warmed in-house. For families and groups there are four larger homes. The Chalet rises over four floors with three suites, its own spa room, sauna and hammam, and a private cinema. The Apartment, at the top of the hotel, has four bedrooms. Facing the hotel, two newer chalets by Peter Marino, with five and nine bedrooms, each come with an indoor pool, a Guerlain spa, a cinema, playrooms and a staff of 15.

Insider tip Book a table at Le 1947 when you book the room. It is a small three-star restaurant inside a 36-room hotel, so places are limited in the busiest weeks.
Why I choose it It is the most complete ski hotel in the Alps for a family, with service, food and children's care on one level, and the chalets let a large group live privately while using the whole hotel.
