Casadelmar stands on a hillside above the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio, on Corsica's south-east coast, in a three-hectare garden by the landscape designer Jean Mus. The architect Jean-François Bodin built it of weathered cedar and glass, low and modern, so that the sea fills every window. All 34 rooms and suites face the water and open onto wide terraces, from 35 square metres up to the 75-square-metre Luxury Suite, and connecting rooms suit families. A four-bedroom private villa with its own pool sits apart. Interiors are light wood and stone with flashes of strong colour and classic designer furniture by the likes of Le Corbusier and Bertoia. A short path leads down to a small private beach, and the 25-metre infinity pool and the spa look across the bay to the mountains. Food is the main event: the restaurant Casadelmar holds a two-MICHELIN-star rating, the only one in Corsica to do so, while Il Pontile and the terrace grill keep things simpler. Palombaggia beach is nearby. The hotel is seasonal, open from late April to early October.

Why I choose it Strong architecture, MICHELIN-starred cooking and a sheltered position on the gulf make it our first choice in southern Corsica.
