Borgo Pignano is a hamlet of Etruscan origin near Volterra, first recorded in 1139 and built up by the Incontri family in the late seventeenth century; its restoration began around 2000. The eighteenth-century villa keeps its frescoes and antiques, and the heated infinity pool is cut into an old limestone quarry. The estate's motto is that everything comes from the land, and it is farmed organically across some 750 acres. A founding member of Beyond Green and certified by Green Globe since 2021, it draws 60 per cent of its energy from renewable sources, solar power and woodchip boilers burning estate timber, harvests rainwater, cleans greywater through planted beds and has Tuscany's first system of swales to hold water in the land. More than 90 per cent of food and drink is sourced locally and more than 80 per cent of staff are local. Ancient grains are stone-ground for bread and pasta, a resident beekeeper tends the hives, and an herbalist makes the spa's products. The Borgo aims for carbon neutrality and no single-use plastic by 2030. A Relais & Châteaux member, it has 33 rooms, suites and villas, and it appears in the MICHELIN Guide.
