An infinity pool with parasols and loungers below the stone borgo at sunset.

Castiglion del Bosco covers 5,000 acres of wooded hills, vineyards and farmland in the UNESCO-listed Val d'Orcia, one of the largest private estates in Tuscany, created by Massimo and Chiara Ferragamo on land with nine centuries of history. At its centre is the medieval borgo, with its tower and the church of San Michele Arcangelo, where an altar fresco of 1345 by Pietro Lorenzetti survives. The suites are in the borgo, with beams, antiques and terraces, while 11 villas made from 17th- and 18th-century farmhouses are spread across the estate, each with a heated infinity pool, a kitchen by the Florentine designer Riccardo Barthel and a four-by-four for the stay. At Campo del Drago, Matteo Temperini holds a two-MICHELIN-star rating for a personal reading of Tuscan cooking drawn from the kitchen garden, with a list of more than 700 labels. Osteria La Canonica serves traditional Tuscan dishes, and the cooking school teaches them. The estate is one of the historic producers of Brunello di Montalcino, guests can play Italy's only private golf club, and the spa uses Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. There are 42 suites and 11 villas, and it holds Three MICHELIN Keys.
