The Ungasan sits on the limestone cliffs of Uluwatu at the southern tip of Bali, high above the Indian Ocean. It is a collection of private villas and suites, and each villa takes a different design as its starting point, from open Balinese plans to colonial and hacienda styles. Infinity pools, clifftop bale pavilions and wide sea views are standard. The one-bedroom suites share a pool and garden with no more than four other rooms, and a group taking three bedrooms or more has the grounds to itself. Waatu, the main restaurant, cooks everything over open flame and coals, with no gas or electricity in the kitchen. Below the cliff, Sundays Beach Club has its own sand and lagoon, with fresh food, water sports, music in the evening and plenty for children. A wellness programme draws on the island's spiritual traditions. For families and friends travelling together, the villas give the privacy of a house with the service of a hotel.
