Amanjiwo, peaceful soul, sits in a natural amphitheatre in Central Java, with the limestone Menoreh Hills behind it, the Kedu Plain in front and four volcanoes, Sumbing, Sundoro, Merbabu and Merapi, on the horizon. Its focus is Borobudur, the ninth-century Buddhist sanctuary and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the largest Buddhist monument in the world, and the resort's limestone architecture echoes the temple in material and form. From a bell-shaped rotunda the suites fan out in two crescents; each has a four-poster bed on a raised terrazzo platform, a garden terrace, a thatched balé and a sunken stone bath, 15 have private pools, and the views run across farmland and the hills or down the valley to Borobudur itself. The colonnaded Restaurant and Bar serves Javanese, Indonesian and international dishes drawn largely from the organic garden and local farms, and the Joglo Sawah hosts cooking classes and a chef's table. The spa follows Javanese healing rituals such as Mandi Lulur, and Ruwatan purification ceremonies are held on the Progo River. Each morning local monks walk the Pradakshina around Borobudur, and guests may join them to meditate at dawn.
