The Chedi Andermatt was the first European hotel from a brand that made its name in Asia, and it sits at 1,447 metres in a Swiss village that was a military garrison for a century before its revival. The building is large, but carefully made, with dark wood, natural stone and leather inside, and more than 200 fireplaces across the property. Twin fires warm the lobby. Rooms and suites run across nine categories, from Alpine Deluxe rooms to the three-bedroom Furka suite, and many suites have balconies with outdoor fireplaces and views of the mountains or the village. There are eight places to eat and drink. The Restaurant is built around a tall cheese cellar, The Japanese serves an omakase menu, and The Japanese at Gütsch moves the idea up the mountain. The Wine and Cigar Libraries have a walk-in humidor. The spa and Health Club have an indoor pool facing the peaks. Skiing on the Andermatt slopes is close by, and in summer the passes and trails are on the doorstep.
