Guests have come to the Bürgenstock ridge, high above Lake Lucerne, since 1873, and the resort has welcomed Audrey Hepburn, Konrad Adenauer, Jimmy Carter and Indira Gandhi. A nine-year rebuild, finished in 2017, turned the 60-hectare estate into a resort of two grand hotels, a chalet hotel and private residence suites, reached by car or, more memorably, by boat and funicular. The Bürgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa is the flagship, and it has two sides: the Heritage keeps its Belle Époque glamour, while the glass architecture of the Contemporary seems to hold guests out over the water. Every room and suite is individually designed and faces the lake. All guests have free use of the 10,000-square-metre Alpine Spa, with an indoor pool and two outdoor pools, one of them the infinity-edge pool the resort is known for, along with a long run of treatment rooms and a fully equipped gym. Across the estate there are 12 restaurants, lounges and bars, among them Spices Kitchen & Terrace for Asian cooking and sushi, and Verbena, where Christian Scharrer cooks seasonal produce from the valley below. There are 102 rooms and suites, and the hotel holds three MICHELIN Keys.

Insider tip Swim in the infinity-edge pool at dawn or dusk, when the light over Lake Lucerne is at its softest.
Why I choose it A whole resort on a ridge above Lake Lucerne, with a 10,000-square-metre spa and an infinity pool that seems to run into the lake.
