The Dunlin is an Auberge resort on the Kiawah River at Johns Island, about 20 miles from Charleston, set within 2,000 acres of Lowcountry marsh and riverbank. The buildings follow Sea Island lines, with gabled roofs, screened porches and long views over the marsh, and Amanda Lindroth designed the interiors. There are 74 rooms and suites, plus a set of villas. Cooking across the three places to eat is farm-fresh and Southern, and the River Barns host events and celebrations. There is a pool, a spa, tennis and bicycles, with golf close by. The real reason to stay is the landscape around it: birdwatching on the tidal flats, fishing for local game fish, paddling among dolphins and sea turtles, and visits to the farm to feed the goats. The hotel shapes some of these into short outings with names such as Paddle & Picnic and Coastal Safari. Charleston is about 40 minutes by car, close enough for a day in the city.
