A colonial street of yellow and blue houses with balconies covered in pink bougainvillea.

Sofitel Legend Santa Clara occupies a 17th-century convent in the San Diego quarter of Cartagena's walled city. The convent was founded in 1621 for the Poor Clares, and after the nuns left it served in turn as a hospital, a prison and a medical school before standing empty, until its revival as a hotel. Colonial cloisters and courtyards full of plants sit beside a later Republican-style wing. There are 126 rooms and suites across Superior, Luxury and Suite categories. The suites in the colonial part of the building have butler service, and higher floors in the newer wing look out to the sea. The Fernando Botero Presidential Suite honours the Colombian artist. Restaurant 1621 leads four places to eat, with Colombian and Caribbean ingredients treated with French technique. The pool is set among the old walls and gardens, and the Sofitel Spa offers a quiet hour away from the heat. The streets of the old town, its squares and the city walls are all a short walk away.

Insider tip For the convent atmosphere, ask for a suite in the colonial section. For a sea view, ask for a high floor in the newer wing.

Why I choose it It is the historic heart of Cartagena under one roof, with French polish and the old town on the doorstep.
