Casa San Agustín is made of three colonial houses in the walled historic centre of Cartagena, on Calle de la Universidad, joined around a central courtyard where part of a 300-year-old aqueduct survives. The restoration kept the stone gargoyles, timber-beamed ceilings and wooden balconies over the street, and the library holds old oil paintings and frescoes. There are 20 rooms and 11 suites, with stone floors, four-poster beds, Frette linen and tiled bathrooms, and some suites have a private terrace with a plunge pool. Alma, the restaurant, cooks the flavours of Cartagena, with a bar beside it. There is a pool and a jacuzzi, and the Aurum Spa offers treatments. When the old town grows hot, the hotel's private beach, Acasi, on Barú island, gives guests a day by the sea. Bicycles are on hand for getting around the walled city. The hotel is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World and holds Two MICHELIN Keys for 2026.

Insider tip Ask for a suite with a terrace and plunge pool, and keep one day free for Acasi Beach on Barú.
Why I choose it A small hotel inside the walls, so the old city is on foot, with a beach day on hand when the heat builds.
