Royal Hotel Sanremo

  • Virtuoso
  • Best time: Apr to Jun; Sep to Oct
The old town of Sanremo climbing its hill.

Lorenzo Bertolini opened the Royal Hotel Sanremo in 1872 to a design by Alessandro Cantù, and after wartime bombing it reopened on Christmas Day 1946. It is run today by Edoardo Varese, the fifth generation of the family, and was a founding member of The Leading Hotels of the World. The hotel stands in a subtropical park of 16,000 square metres, a short walk from the beach and the town centre. Its seawater pool, heated to 27°C, was designed by Gio Ponti in 1948, who said he disliked rectangular pools because lakes and rivers are not rectangular. Families are well provided for, with a playroom, an outdoor playground, the Smile Club programme in high season, and tennis and mini-golf with equipment included. Celebrations are part of the hotel's life, with weddings, anniversaries and birthdays held on the terraces and in the gardens, arranged with the resident flower stylist. Fiori di Murano serves Ligurian and Mediterranean cooking under Murano glass chandeliers, and summer brings candlelit dinners on the Il Giardino terrace and an evening pizzeria with live music. The Royal Wellness spa is for adults, with 16- and 17-year-olds welcome when accompanied.
