The Castello di Reschio dates from 1050 and stands at the heart of a private estate of 3,700 acres in the Umbrian hills near the Tuscan border, a landscape of woodland, meadows, a lake and more than 50 farmhouses, many now restored. The Bolza family has shaped the estate for more than three decades, and the architect Benedikt Bolza designed the castle hotel inside and out, with an in-house studio that favours reclaimed materials and traditional building methods. Rooms and suites pair 1,000-year-old architecture with modern Italian furniture and art, and the Tower Suite rises through five floors of the old tower. Beneath the castle, the former wine cellars hold the Bathhouse, with an underground pool, a Roman bath, a hammam and a sauna; outside the walls an oval pool is served by Bar Torrino in the old watchtower. Ristorante al Castello cooks Umbrian classics from the estate's gardens and vineyards on a terrace facing the sunset, and Ristorante alle Scuderie serves through the day. Bell'Aria, one of the estate's restored houses, sleeps 12 in six bedrooms, with an 18-metre heated infinity pool and its own tennis court.
