Palm trees leaning over a sandy beach, with a small wooded islet in clear water.

Nayara Bocas del Toro is an adults-only resort on its own small island in the Bocas del Toro archipelago, close to the lively harbour of Bocas Town. Its villas stand on stilts over the Caribbean, designed by architect Andres Brenes with a nod to Bali but built in a style that belongs to Panama, and there are treehouses as well. The reefs around the island are the main draw, and snorkelling, kayaking and paddle-boarding fill most mornings. Executive chef Joseph Archbold, who grew up in Bocas del Toro and trained in Paris, cooks with local and seasonal produce, aiming for as short a distance as possible between farm and plate; meals are served at The Elephant House and the Coral Cafe. A spa offers slower afternoons. Most of the team come from the islands, and they take real pride in showing guests Panama as they know it. Nayara also has hotels in Costa Rica, so the two countries combine easily in one journey.
