Magellan Explorer is the expedition ship of Antarctica21, launched in 2019 and purpose-built for the company's boutique fly-and-cruise expeditions to Antarctica. It holds ice class LR PC6, measures 90.7 metres and cruises at 14 knots, and it carries up to 88 guests on air-cruises and 96 on sea voyages, with 60 expedition staff and crew. There are seven categories of cabin. The Penthouse Suite of 33 square metres has a balcony; the Deluxe Suite and the two-bedroom Triple Suite, each of 44 square metres, have two balconies; the Deluxe Veranda Cabin of 22 square metres has two rooms; and the Veranda Cabin, the Single Veranda Cabin and the Porthole Cabin, the one category with a porthole in place of a balcony, run from 18 to 19 square metres. Public spaces include a glass-enclosed observation lounge and presentation room, a library, a gym, a dining room with panoramic views, the Antarctica Lounge bar and a sauna. The ship was built with Tier III compliance, a heat recovery system, reverse osmosis for its water and technology to reduce waste.

Insider tip For outdoor space of your own, choose a Veranda category or one of the suites; the Porthole Cabins have a porthole rather than a balcony.
Why I choose it A small ice-class ship built for Antarctica21's fly-and-cruise voyages, carrying no more than 88 guests on air-cruises.
