Sommerro

  • Virtuoso
  • One Key
  • Open year-round (May to Sep for long days)
The white sloping roof of the Oslo Opera House and modern waterfront buildings across calm harbour water.

Sommerro occupies a 1930s landmark in central Oslo that was once the headquarters of the city's electricity company, now restored as a hotel that mixes original Art Deco detail with newer work. There are 242 rooms and suites, from snug loft rooms to large suites, all finished with careful Art Deco touches and modern comforts. Seven restaurants and several cocktail bars fill the building. Ekspedisjonshallen serves breakfast and lunch, Plah cooks Thai and Norwegian food around an open kitchen, and TAK serves dinner. At its heart is Vestkantbadet, the 1932 public bath, restored along with its Art Deco mosaic and now the centre of a 1,400-square-metre wellness area with a pool, saunas, a cold plunge and a large gym, and there is a further pool and sauna on the roof. Treatments run from cryotherapy to advanced facials. A calendar of live music, cinema screenings and yoga sessions runs through the year, and meeting rooms and event spaces can be hired for anything from a board meeting to a wedding.

Why I choose it A lively city hotel with a historic bathhouse at its centre, and a comfortable start or finish to a journey north to the Arctic.
