Laucala Island

  • Two Keys
  • Best time: May to Oct
The sun low over the islands and bays around Laucala, the sea gold beneath it.

Laucala is a private island in Fiji, in the Koro Sea, covering about five square miles of rainforest, reef and coconut groves. The resort keeps it for very few guests. There are 25 villas, each built from thatch, timber and stone, with vaulted ceilings, strong woodwork and art, and each with its own pool, sundeck and outdoor bath. Some face the ocean and some the jungle, and all are set well apart. Much of the food comes from the island's own farm, and dining is relaxed, from barefoot lunches on the beach to candlelit dinners. Meals, drinks and most activities are included, and a personal host looks after each stay. The days are shaped by the island: diving and snorkelling on the reef, walks through the rainforest, golf, riding, boat trips and the spa. Guests reach the island on the resort's own aircraft, Air Laucala, which flies from Nadi in about 50 minutes, or by private jet. The island is closed for renovation and reopens in October 2027.

Closed for renovation until October 2027.

Insider tip Ask the host to plan a day around the island's farm, then let the kitchen cook what you have seen picked.

Why I choose it It is one of the Pacific's true private islands, with space, privacy and enough to do that a long stay never feels repetitive.
