J.K. Place Capri stands above Marina Grande in a building that began as a private house, Villa Bovaro, built before 1878 and a hotel by 1885. As the Hotel Continental it lodged the Wolcott-Perry sisters, who inspired Compton Mackenzie's novel Vestal Fire; later it became the Métropole and then the Palatium, and building work in the late 1980s uncovered Roman cisterns and the start of a Roman road down to the harbour. It is one of very few hotels on Capri set right on the sea. Michele Bonan designed the interiors as those of a private house, classic and easy, with pale floors, soft pastels and a marine palette the hotel compares to a 1930s racing yacht. Some rooms have balconies over the water, and the Penthouse Suite has a long terrace facing the Gulf of Naples. JKitchen serves light Mediterranean food built on the day's catch from a terrace with wide views, and there is a lounge bar, a garden pool bar and the J.K. Spa with steam room. A free shuttle runs from 7:00 a.m. to midnight to the harbour and the Piazzetta. There are 22 rooms.
